Workshop Meditation with Dr. Kim Dawson

Meditation based on an exercise in DT Suzuki’s book The Field of Zen

Begin by noticing the chair beneath you supporting your weight. Close your eyes ifyou wish. It will be easier to do the exercise if you close your eyes. Whether you call an infinite all-knowing, ever-present being God, the Creator, or some other name, one way to know what an infinite being knows is this:

Try in your imagination to visualize space as something vastly expanding and filling everything everywhere, your own being even having an infinite expanse within and outside yourself and capable of focusing on the smallest possible points. For instance, to a millionth partof a hair on your skin.

When you have done this try further to shrink that point even farther to a still smaller particle of the pore that emanates that hair in your skin. Tune your attention within to the smallest possible point within yourself. When you have done this, try to attend to a still smaller particle of a hair cell, with that cell and any molecule like DNA, an atom of a poignant molecule, or a quantum glow of lightfrom within, until you come to a limit beyond which there is nothing.

Now, sit with that nothingness for a moment, and notice how that nothingness is everything you see. And you realize that as soon you are looking at nothing, you are returning tovisualize the smallest particle you can imagine, and your mind is focused intently on that tiny moment, and you notice soft wind blow your mind as it opens up to the full expanse of all the moments in every cell and organ of your body, from your skin toyour heart and the neurons in your brain, and every moment of your life is resonating within and around you as you sit here, in full alignment with who you are as you bring your awareness once again to this room and one another. Now feel the seat beneath you and open your eyes.

Now I invite you to align with an open, loving awareness as you gently look at one another quietly, abiding in the alignment with greater presence here today in our togetherness.

Please stand. Move your arms (demonstrate moving arms in shape of infinity) to welcome our infinite beings as we align with ourselves and others in this space.

I Invite you to share for a few minutes some key moments of your experience. After 15-30 minutes we can continue into finding alignments.
